Frequently Asked Questions
01
Why can't an abortion be performed before 4 weeks of pregnancy?
Before 4 weeks, a legal abortion is not recommended because:
It is not yet possible to visually confirm an intrauterine pregnancy on ultrasound.
Hormonal tests may come back positive, but the gestational sac is not yet fully assessable on ultrasound, which makes it impossible to rule out an ectopic pregnancy (outside the uterus).
The effectiveness of the treatment is not guaranteed.
If pregnancy is not identified by ultrasound, it cannot be guaranteed that the procedure will work correctly or that gestational tissue is actually being expelled.
There is a risk in not having an accurate diagnosis.
For safety, it is necessary to wait until the ultrasound clearly shows the pregnancy inside the uterus, which usually occurs between week 4 and 5.
03
Why are laboratories requested to perform an ILE procedure?
Laboratory tests are ordered to ensure the patient is in optimal condition and to reduce any risks. The most common tests are:
Complete blood count:
Evaluate hemoglobin levels and rule out severe anemia that could complicate bleeding.Group and HR:
Important to determine if anti-D immunoglobulin is required in cases of Rh negative blood type.Quantitative pregnancy test (BHCG):
It allows correlating hormone levels with ultrasound and ruling out ectopic pregnancy or abnormalities.Other studies depending on the case:
Glucose, HIV, VDRL, coagulation tests, thyroid studies.
Fibrinogen and other complementary tests are requested for:
Prevent risks of bleeding
Detecting coagulation disorders
Increase the safety of the procedure
Making informed clinical decisions
Establish timely management if a complication arises
In high-security clinics like GINESER, these studies help to guarantee a safe, controlled abortion in accordance with FIGO/WHO standards.
02
Why is it not permitted to have an abortion after 12.6 weeks?
In Mexico, local laws establish gestational limits for legal abortion procedures. In most states where it is legal, the limit is 12 weeks and 6 days.
The reasons are:
The law sets the limit.
Although medically a procedure can be performed safely beyond 12 weeks, legally it is classified as a voluntary termination of pregnancy and no longer as a legal abortion, and is subject to other requirements depending on the state.
04
What is the difference between a medication abortion and a manual vacuum aspiration ?
Here's the difference explained clinically:
ILE with medication
A combination of 2 medications is used
It works like a process similar to a miscarriage.
It is recommended up to week 9 according to the clinical guide.
The expulsion takes place at home with follow-up presence after 15 days.
Advantages: non-invasive, more natural, less medical intervention.
Disadvantages: there may be heavy bleeding, cramping pain, and it requires further evaluation to confirm that the process was completed.
ILE AMEU (Manual Aspiration of the Uterine)
It is a safe and quick outpatient surgical procedure.
A sterile cannula and manual suction equipment are used to remove the uterine contents.
Approximate time: 10–15 minutes.
Recommended between week 5 and 12.6.
Advantages: >99% effective, minimal bleeding, fast recovery.
Disadvantages: It requires trained personnel and specialized equipment.
